As mentioned in the lengthy liner notes that accompanied the three volume Mad Fables Live CD set, there were some blatant omissions from the collection. With the advent of low cost CD burners and cheaper software, it became possible to extract material without the time and/or expense of a large studio like Fantasy. So, here it is, another CD release of some Mad Fables tunes found on cassettes in a back drawer. There were six tapes - two each of Stage Door 23 and the Val Thing, and two different performances at Red Oak. The recordings amounted to about eight hours of listening. Finding the 'lost' songs was more difficult. A lot of the missing tunes were not popular for playing out in clubs. The 'Val Thing' helped tremendously being the source of 'Never Flow South', a rather length 'Pimping Down Pine' 'Pillar of Salt', 'Jungle Madness' and 'Mudhole Blues'. The other stuff was all from live gigs. Unfortunately, the Stage Door performance had a jazz set ( from which 'Moondance' was used); the jazzy orgiinal songs had already been included in the 3CD release. However, the second set debuted '3 1/3% Solution' and the night ended with a Rex Doyle song ('Knock on Wood'). 'Outside Looking In' was lifted from a Red Oak performance along with 'Biding My Time' and 'Basic Funky Song'. Maybe something else will turn up someday, who knows? There are a bunch of reel-to-reel tapes in the closet which have deteriorated in storage and are in need of a tape recorder with adjustable tape heads. This is a hard item to find. Hope you enjoy this installment of tunes. Mike Radtke,Berkeley, 1999
