Site Abusers and Download Problems

So, as madfables.com is a tiny little flick in the internet scheme, you would think that there are a lot of bigger sites to pick on, wouldn't you? But, no -- between nimda and code red virus attacks, there are renegade robots who disregard the robot file and scan the entire site looking for email addresses. Another pest are attacks in an attempt to spoof (people who want to use our site as a base for sending out spam). And sometimes its just plain folk (i.e., fans) who are forgetful and leave their playlist in a loop for days on end. From last November through January, the number of fictitious traffic to the madfables site has snow-balled into a cause for concern as a cumulative Denial of Services. Aside from the kaiten virus which infected the server to steal bandwidth (a security hole plugged with the o/s upgrade in February), it finally came time to take preventive measures to reduce the effects of these attacks. Abusers A list of ip addresses has been automatically generated (extracted from your Http Request) when certain abusive criteria are met. One of the key elements of this criteria is the direct request to inner site content (asking for a picture or song without coming from a page on the site). Unfortunately, this has an unpleasant side-effect for some people who are behind firewalls and/or proxy servers which do not provide referrer information as part of their request. In English, you say? Your computer configuration might make you look like one of the abusers to us -- we probably added your address onto our list. Download problems The most common result of the above preventitive measures is download problems. Symptoms are either the appearance of the dreaded 'forbidden' screen or the same song is downloaded no matter which you pick. If you are having these problems, contact me and I will remove you from the list to correct the situation. In severe cases, offending ip addresses will be blocked from access to this site!
